Who’s Who: the Orchestra’s Conductors

Nicholas Smith

Nicholas Smith is a graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, where he studied the flute. He continued to play the flute professionally after becoming Assistant Director of Music at Glenalmond College, Perthshire.

In 2004 he moved south to take up the position of Director of Music at St John’s School, Leatherhead, a position he held until 2018, and he is currently teaching at Seaford College.

The baton has, for many years, superseded the flute and he directs numerous choirs and ensembles. His remaining time is spent with his three young children and coaching rugby at Dorking RFC.

Nicholas has conducted the Surrey Philharmonic Orchestra since 2012.
